While living in AK, I had a working lunch at Carl’s Jr. one Saturday and at the table next to me sat an older gentleman. We spoke and casually talked about the beautiful weather we’d been having. As my client sat down, she and I began talking and I would occasionally see him looking at us. He finally finished his meal and as he got up, he stopped and asked were we related and I said no (she was a 7 y/o Caucasian girl). He then said, she reminded him of his granddaughters and great granddaughters. He said he doesn’t see them much and he’s by himself since his wife passed away 4 yrs ago and his son passed away as well. He said, “I’m 90 yrs old and I still have 20 yrs left in me”!!!
He walked away to throw his trash in the garbage and my client and continued talking. As he walked back to the table to gather the rest of his things, I said, “you’re so inspiring can I please take a picture with you” and he smiled and said, “why yes” (as he blushed). We took the picture, I invited him to church, gave him my number, he thanked me, and he walked out and got in his car and drove away.
I never knew what his day to day life was like but one thing I knew is that he wasn’t letting life and the absence of others stop him from living but are you?
